Premature Baby Clothes

premature baby clothes

For premmies we offer a wide selection of premature baby clothes. Work with our stylists to find the small sizes your need.

Buying premature baby clothes can be a challenge. Not every store carries a wide selection, and it's generally not something you know you're going to need ahead of time, which can leave family members scrambling if your baby arrives early.

There are several things to consider when shopping for premature baby clothes. It's not just about needing regular baby clothes in a smaller size, contrary to what some people think. First of all, preemies are not all the same size. All brands can have slightly different sizing criteria, but in general premature baby clothes come in three sizes: micro, for babies under two and a half pounds, tiny, which is for babies up to four pounds, and preemie, which generally fits babies that are around three to six pounds.

If your baby is still in a NICU, make sure to ask the nurses on staff if it's okay to bring in clothes, some hospitals prefer to just use their own gowns for babies in their care. However, if you get the go ahead to go shopping, make sure to get the correct size, and to get clothing appropriate for your baby's needs.

For example, Perfectly Preemie makes a line of preemie clothes that can be put on very small babies with very little fuss. The baby can be dressed while laying down. Lay your child on the garment, pull the fabric around her and fasten the garment shut with the velcro and/or ties on the sides. These outfits allow plenty of access for hospital workers to work with any lines or tubes that your baby needs during her hospital stay. All of Perfectly Preemie's outfits come with a matching hat, which is very important to keep little heads warm.

Carters, Gerber, Spasilk and Zutana also make preemie lines. Carters has retail stores, as well as being carried in many other department stores and big box stores. Gerber clothing is also available in many stores. However, not all stores carry all preemie sizes. For very small sizes, shopping online may be your best bet.

Make sure to wash premature baby clothes before dressing your child in them. Wash clothes with a very mild detergent specifically designed for babies, to make the risk as small as possible of irritating your baby's sensitive skin.

Premature baby clothes can still be comfortable and adorable, and with some careful shopping, there's no reason your baby can't be stylish at any size.
